Preview ATM Wire Scam: How Thieves Empty Your Bank Account in Seconds

The “wire scam” is an ingenious fraud targeting ATMs, capable of quickly emptying your bank account.

The dynamics of this scam are unfortunately recurrent. The customer inserts their card into the ATM, enters the PIN code, and the transaction appears to proceed normally. The problem arises when the card, after the operation is complete or interrupted, is not returned by the machine.

This anomalous card retention is the core of the “wire scam.” Criminals use a thin device, often a wire or a similar mechanism, to block the card inside the ATM’s slot. When the victim walks away, thinking there’s an ATM malfunction or an error, the fraudsters intervene to retrieve the card. Having likely already observed the PIN being entered, they are then able to access the account and withdraw money or carry out other illicit transactions in a very short time. It is crucial to pay the utmost attention and, if your card is not returned, do not leave the ATM and immediately contact your bank or the authorities.
