The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) has launched an open recruitment process for a permanent Head of Exhibitions position. This staff role, which falls outside the scope of collective bargaining agreements, is directly attached to the Artistic Sub-directorate. The selection will be made through a competitive examination and merit assessment (concurso-oposición) system.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading, coordinating, and managing the museum’s comprehensive exhibition program. This includes:

  • Overseeing curatorial development, logistical planning, and budget management for all exhibitions.
  • Supervising the coordination and execution of temporary exhibitions, including administrative tasks and formalizing agreements with artists, curators, external researchers, and institutions.
  • Developing and maintaining the exhibition calendar for the main venue, external sites, and collection exhibitions, in close coordination with the Collections Department.
  • Supervising the production of new artworks and site-specific installations for temporary exhibitions.
  • Actively participating in shaping the museum’s curatorial direction alongside the Artistic Sub-directorate or Museum Director.
  • Collaborating with the Restoration-Conservation and Art Registry departments on the conditions for storage, display, and conservation of artworks, as well as managing loans and transportation.
  • Supervising the development of museographic designs and the technical coordination of exhibition installations across all venues.
  • Ensuring the quality and timely delivery of all textual content related to exhibitions.
  • Fostering strong relationships and interdepartmental collaboration with Education, Public Programs, Editorial Activities, Communication, and Studies departments to develop integrated programming and content, promoting a collaborative ecosystem.
  • Contributing to potential artwork acquisitions in collaboration with the Collections Department.
  • Working with the Communication Directorate on press materials, social media, and other dissemination strategies.
  • Collaborating with the Education area to define the educational framework for each exhibition.
  • Partnering with the Public Programs area to conceive and develop parallel discursive or live art programs linked to the exhibition schedule.
  • Collaborating with the Library and Documentation Center to enrich bibliographic resources related to artists featured in the MNCARS curatorial program.
  • Supervising and guiding their team to ensure all projects meet established objectives with the highest quality standards.
  • Proposing, facilitating, and managing touring exhibitions to other national and international art institutions.
  • Maintaining a robust network of relationships with other national and international museums, art centers, artists, curators, and cultural agents.
  • Participating in general organizational tasks of the department as required, and performing any other related duties assigned by the Artistic Sub-directorate or Museum Director.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria by the application deadline and maintain them until contract formalization:

  • Nationality: Be a Spanish national, a national of an EU Member State, the spouse or direct descendant of a Spanish or EU citizen (under specific conditions), or a foreign national with legal residency in Spain.
  • Functional Capacity: Possess the necessary functional capacity to perform the described duties.
  • Age: Be at least sixteen years old and not exceed the compulsory retirement age.
  • Disqualification: Not have been dismissed through disciplinary action from any public administration or constitutional/statutory body, nor be subject to absolute or special disqualification from public office by judicial resolution. For non-Spanish nationals, not be disqualified or subject to an equivalent disciplinary sanction in their home country that would prevent access to public employment under similar terms.
  • Education: Hold a university degree (Licenciatura or Grado) or an equivalent foreign qualification. Foreign qualifications must be duly recognized or homologated; this requirement does not apply to those with professional qualification recognition under EU law for regulated professions.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination combined with a merit assessment (concurso-oposición).

Contract Conditions

This is a permanent employment contract.

Gross Annual Remuneration

  • Base Salary: €50,249.34
  • Additional Payment (e.g., bonus): €8,374.93
  • Productivity Bonus: 15%
