Only a few days remain to explore “Zodiac Machine,” the inaugural exhibition in Spain by multidisciplinary artist Justin Caguiat (born in Tokyo in 1989). Organized by the Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Madrid and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, this significant show will be open until April 1st at the Parroquia de Santa Ana y la Esperanza, before embarking on its journey to the Serpentine in autumn 2026.
Conceived as a site-specific installation, the exhibition seamlessly integrates both inside the historic church and into its vibrant surrounding urban environment, extending across plazas, shop windows, and various spaces within the nearby Mercado de Moratalaz. The church itself, constructed between 1965 and 1971 by Miguel Fisac—a pivotal figure in the Spanish modern movement—was designed in the context of post-Vatican II liturgical renewal, aiming to foster more active congregational participation. Its architecture is defined by pure forms, a pronounced horizontality, and a radial organization centered around the altar. The nave, with its acoustically optimized convex curves, alongside its contemplative patios and annex volumes, crafts a unique atmosphere that intensifies the sensory and immersive dimensions of Caguiat’s artistic vision.
Within this distinctive setting, the artist has crafted an expansive installation that fuses painting, sculpture, photography, film, and sound. This work engages in a profound dialogue with both the church’s architecture and the everyday fabric of the neighborhood. The exhibition also draws key inspiration from Justo Gallego Martínez and his “Cathedral of Justo,” an iconic example of radical, self-taught creation that profoundly influences the free-spirited and process-oriented nature of this artistic endeavor.
“Zodiac Machine” is a part of the ambitious program by the Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Madrid, which since 2020 has been dedicated to revitalizing unique urban spaces across the city. Through pioneering projects by artists such as Ian Cheng, Michael Armitage, Lucas Arruda, Precious Okoyomon, and Pol Taburet, the foundation strives to transcend traditional exhibition formats, integrating art directly into the dynamic pulse of urban life.
