British Cyclist Finlay Tarling Dies After Accident at Tour of Portugal
Welsh professional cyclist Finlay Tarling has died from injuries sustained in a serious accident during the Volta a Portugal. The Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed the death of the 19-year-old.
Tarling was part of the NSN Development racing team. The NSN Cycling Team announced on X (formerly Twitter), "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling today. Fin was a much-loved member of our team, but more than that, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be sorely missed."
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also offered his condolences to Tarling's family and team, stating that the news of his death "deeply shocks us."
According to media reports, the Welshman was hit by a vehicle on the eighth stage of the race, from Melgaco to Fafe. The vehicle was reportedly traveling in the opposite direction to the peloton, despite warning signs on the route. The organizers have not yet confirmed this information, but have announced that further details will be released when appropriate. The race was abandoned following the accident, and the award ceremony was cancelled.
Finlay Tarling's 22-year-old brother, Joshua Tarling, rides for the WorldTour team Ineos Grenadiers and won bronze in the individual time trial at the 2023 UCI Road World Championships, among other victories.
