Wolfram Weimer's Solo Decision on Memory Culture: "Unsurpassed Arrogance"
Germany is often praised for its engagement with Nazism, the Holocaust, and injustices under the GDR regime. However, one chapter was missing: colonialism. The federal government shared this view. The coalition agreement by CDU/CSU and SPD stated that the reckoning with colonialism should be "intensified" and a "dignified place of remembrance" established. But State Minister for Culture Wolfram Weimer apparently doesn't deem the subject that important. He has removed colonialism from the federal memorial concept. Now, he has also decided that the place of remembrance will be located in Bremen, not Berlin. A spokesperson confirmed this but provided no details on how the decision was reached or what is planned for Bremen. Historians and activists involved in addressing colonialism were apparently not consulted.
In Bremen, the colonial monument, a brick elephant erected in 1932 and repurposed as an anti-colonial monument in 1989, stands. This unilateral decision by Weimer, bypassing a broader discussion, has drawn criticism, with some calling it "unrivaled arrogance" given the exclusion of key stakeholders.
