Telespazio Inaugurates New Satellite Antenna in the Azores

Telespazio has unveiled a new S/X band satellite antenna on Santa Maria Island, located in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. This new infrastructure is a significant addition to the company's international ground station network and will be utilized for communications with low Earth orbit satellites, thereby expanding coverage for upcoming space missions.

The construction of this antenna was part of the Polar Station Facility program, through which Telespazio is developing a network of ground stations strategically placed across various global regions. In addition to the newly established facility in the Azores, this network already includes two antennas in Sodankylä, Finland, and the BTS-2 station at the Fucino Space Center in Abruzzo.

The Azores' geographical position in the Atlantic Ocean significantly increases opportunities for satellite contact as they pass over the region. This strategic placement contributes to reducing the time required for data acquisition and transmission.

What is a Ground Station Network Used For?

Ground stations serve as the crucial link between satellites and the operators who manage them. Through antennas like the one installed in Santa Maria, commands are sent to satellites, data collected by onboard instruments is received, and system statuses are monitored throughout the entire mission.

Having multiple ground stations distributed across different parts of the planet allows for an increased duration of contact between a satellite and the ground segment. For low Earth orbit constellations, which traverse specific regions rapidly, this translates to more frequent data downloads and reduced time for that data to reach users.

The new antenna will be deployed for the first time as part of the IRIDE program, an Italian constellation for Earth observation developed by the Italian Space Agency with support from the European Space Agency. Specifically, it will be used to receive data from the NIMBUS and PLATiNO satellites. In the future, the station will also support operations for the second generation of the COSMO-SkyMed constellation.
